Tribute to Dr Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma

It is with deep respect and gratitude that we remember and honour the life and legacy of His Excellency, Dr Sam Nujoma, Founding President of the Republic of Namibia. His demise at the age of 95 marks the end of an era in our Namibian history.

President Nujoma’s leadership was instrumental in transforming Namibia into a prosperous and peaceful nation. In his Independence Speech on 21 March 1990, he spoke with pride, declaring, “we are gathered here today, not to pass yet another resolution, but to celebrate the dawn of a new era in this land and to proclaim to the world that a new star has risen on the African continent.”

His words proclaimed the birth of a democratic Namibia, one where the collective future of the people was firmly in their own hands. His call for unity, equality and justice became the foundation of our national identity. He reminded us that the achievement of independence brought with it the responsibility to build a future based on peace, prosperity and opportunity for all Namibians, irrespective of race, religion or gender.

Dr. Nujoma's passion for the development of Namibia was evident throughout his presidency. Under his leadership, Namibia embraced Vision 2030 – a vision that aimed to elevate the quality of life for all Namibians and to position the country among the developed nations of the world by 2030. His vision for a prosperous and harmonious society focused on sustainable development, education, science and technology, gender equality and the advancement of social justice. His belief in partnership - between government, communities, the private sector and civil society - laid the foundation for a united and vibrant nation.

Through his enduring guidance, President Nujoma also fought for national reconciliation. He was determined in restoring friendly relations among all the people of Namibia and forging a sense of common purpose. His policy of national reconciliation set the stage for the peaceful and democratic society that we continue to build today.

His legacy extends beyond political and economic achievements. He was deeply committed to social justice, particularly in the areas of gender equality and child welfare. He took bold steps to protect the rights of women, helping to break down traditional barriers that had limited their opportunities. His advocacy for the plight of children, including introducing policies for child maintenance, demonstrated his deep care for the well-being of the most vulnerable in society.

As we reflect on his presidency, we are reminded of his call to look forward with confidence and hope. We shall carry forward his legacy by striving for a Namibia where prosperity, harmony and opportunity are accessible to all.

On behalf of the Namibia Agricultural Union, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and to the many friends he made throughout his extraordinary life.

Endapo nawa, tate Sam.

Your journey has ended, but the path you paved for us endures.
